L-R: Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad, Prof Syukri, Dr Zahri, Dr Zakaria and Dr Zaini At the School of Social Sciences Workshop held on 22nd October 2011 at Park Royal Hotel, Batu Feringghi, Penang, all ISDEV lecturers who were teaching during the 2010/11 Academic Session won Excellent Teaching Awards. ISDEV Director Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh won three awards for the three courses he taught. So were ISDEV Deputy Director Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad and ISDEV lecturer Dr Zahri Hamat. These were followed by Dr Zakaria Bahari and Dr Mohamad Zaini Abu Bakar who won two and one awards respectively, for the respective two and one courses they taught. The awards were given to them by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Omar Osman. The collection of the book proposals Subsequent to two workshops, the first on manuscript acquisition organised by the School of Humanities and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) on 24-25 May 2011, and the second on book titles' revision by ISDEV and DBP on 22 September 2011, a total of 19 book titles have been developed by 17 ISDEV members for publication by the DBP. The titles were presented and approved by DBP officers during the second Worskhop. The collection of all the 19 titles in hard and softcopy was submitted by ISDEV Director Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh during a meeting with DBP in Kuala Lumpur on 14th October 2011. A Memorandum of Understanding between the DBP and ISDEV is expected to be signed in mid-December 2011. The 19 books are planned to be launched at the end of 2012, InshaAllah.

18 October - This week's Tuesday Teaching was held at the usual time slot but the venue was change to SK104. "Gratefulness" (Kesyukuran) and Ways to Express Gratitude to Allah SWT was the topic of the Tazkirah delivered by Ustazah Murni Yussof. It was her first endeavor to deliver the Tazkirah for this session before 30 attentive listeners made up lecturers and students. In her reminder, she highlighted how to express thanks to Allah SWT by giving several examples. Ustaz Shahir then continued with his lesson on Tajwid (rules of Quranic reading) focusing on Hamzah al-Wasal which is used to connect the reading of one word to the next word (the hamzah al-wasl looks like an alif with a little letter over it). It is commonly found in the beginning of a word. It is called Hamzah al-wasl because it connects or joins ( wasl ) to a point with a sukoon. L-R: Dr Zahri Hamat, Prof Syukri and Dr Zakaria Bahari arriving at Brunei International Airport ISDEV Zakat Research Team, consisting of Prof Muhammad Syukri Salleh, Dr Zakaria Bahari and Dr Zahri Hamat, was in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam from 25th till 29th September 2011. The main aims were to study about zakat accounting in Brunei and establish networking with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UDB) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA). For these purposes, they visited and had discussions with the country's Zakat Section of the Ministry of Islamic Religious Affairs, the Academy of Brunei Studies of the UDB, and the UNISSA. The visit was fruitful and would hopefully entail with academic and research collaborations. 27 Sept - ' Each of the living things would die'. Thus as servants and khalifah (vicegerent) of Allah SWT on earth, we must be willing to equip ourselves with useful practices in preparation for our death. That is the main summary of the Tazkirah delivered by Ustazah Radieah Mohd Nor during this lecture. She added, as human beings, we should have short and long term plans as a guide for us to follow and execute throughout our lives. Every time that passes by us is very valuable. So we must fill it up with useful things so that we would not regret later on. The next session was then continued by Ustaz Muhammad Yasir Yusuf, who continued with the discussions on Munakahat : Chapter on Nikah (Marriage). The focus of the day's lesson was associated with the rights of children towards their parents and the lineage relationship among them.
