EXCELLENT TEACHING AWARDS FOR ALL ISDEV'S LECTURERS

L-R: Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad, Prof Syukri, Dr Zahri, Dr Zakaria and Dr Zaini At the School of Social Sciences Workshop held on 22nd October 2011 at Park Royal Hotel, Batu Feringghi, Penang, all ISDEV lecturers who were teaching during the 2010/11 Academic Session won Excellent Teaching Awards. ISDEV Director Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh won three awards for the three courses he taught. So were ISDEV Deputy Director Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad and ISDEV lecturer Dr Zahri Hamat. These were followed by Dr Zakaria Bahari and Dr Mohamad Zaini Abu Bakar who won two and one awards respectively, for the respective two and one courses they taught. The awards were given to them by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Omar Osman. ISDEV Director hopes that these awards would be followed this year by winning the Top 10 KPI Awards of the School (see his blog at http://syukri54.blogspot.com/2011/10/awards-are-good-but-inadequate-for-real.html). DR ZAKARIA AWARDED EXCELLENT SERVICE AWARD

AWESOME NEWS YET AGAIN FOR ISDEV - WARJIO EXCELS

ISDEV PhD candidate Brother Warjio had superbly succeeded to defend his viva which was held on Thursday 7 April, 2011 at the Mc Clintock Room of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) Building. His PhD Thesis was on “ Parti Politik Dakwah di Indonesia: Ideologi, Strategi dan Pencapaian Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) 1998-2009 ” (Political Da’wah Parties in Indonesia: Ideology, Strategy and Achievements of the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) 1998-2000). Warjio’s thesis was supervised by Dr. Zaini Abu Bakar and Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh. He took a minimum duration of just two years to complete his study. Warjio had confidently answered questions posed b y the panel of examiners during the viva chaired by Professor Munirah Ghazali. The three examiners were Professor Dr. Badlihisham Mohd. RADIEAH WON TAN SRI MUHYIDDIN MOHD YASSIN BEST MASTER THESIS AWARD 2010

Radieah with her Award In an awarding ceremony held at Prince & Residence Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 21 February 2011, ISDEV Master Mixed Mode 2008 student, Radieah binti Mohd Noor was announced as the winner of the annual national Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin Best Master Thesis Award 2010. Based on an assessment on her thesis entitled Principles of Islamic-based Development in Ibn Khaldun's Mukadimah , the Award consists of a gold medal, cash and certificate totalling RM10,000.00 altogether. The Award was delivered at the ceremony by Deputy Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin himself. PHD STUDENT MUHAMMAD TAHIR NOMINATED FOR BEST THESIS AWARD

Muhammad Tahir (sitting, 2nd left) with members of the Board of Examiners Another ISDEV PhD student, Muhammad Tahir, has successfully passed his PhD with flying colours. He has been suggested by all his three thesis examiners, external and internal, to be nominated for USM Best Thesis Award (Pure Arts) 2011. This was decided at the end of his viva voce held on Thursday 10th February 2011. The title of his thesis is The Methods and Practice of Tazkiyyah An-Nafs in Islamic-Based Development: A Case Study of Koperasi Pondok Pasentren (KOPENTREN), Darul Tauhiid, Bandung, Indonesia . Prior to this, in 2008, three ISDEV PhD students, Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad, Dr Zahri Hamat and Dr Nor Azzah Kamri were also nominated by the School of Social Sciences for the same Award. Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad won it and later in 2009, she also won Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin Best PhD Thesis Award. MISSIONS ACCOMPLISHED

After being in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for about two weeks, the Acting Director of ISDEV Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad and Associate Researcher Br. Ahmad Azrin Adnan have finally left for Malaysia this evening. Dr Sukainah and Br. Azrin with Prof Syukri (middle) at IDB entrance Their missions at the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) were concluded on Wednesday 12 May 2010 with a presentation at IRTI Staff Seminar. Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad presented a paper on Fundamentals of Islamic Management Methods while Br. Ahmad Azrin Adnan on Theoretical Framework of Islamic Consumer Behaviour. The IRTI Staff Seminar Prior to that, Dr Fadzila and Br. DR FADZILA AZNI WINS AGAIN

ISDEV POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

With reference to Associated Press of Pakistan dated 14th February 2009, Dr. Abdul Hameed Khan Abbasi (pic), ISDEV Post-Doctoral Fellow has been conferred the prestigious Presidential Award for Academic Distinction named Izaz-i-fazeelat for the year 2008 by the President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan on Jan 27, 2009. The award was conferred on Dr. Abdul Hameed for his outstanding contribution in producing most excellent quality text-books. His text-books have been recognized as the Best Text-Books on the national level in Pakistan. Dr Abdul Hameed Khan (Abbasi) is an Assistant Professor (BPS-19) at the Department of Quran & Tafseer, Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies, at the Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad, Pakistan. DR FADZILA AZNI AHMAD WON BEST PHD THESIS AWARD

On the said historic night, our beloved member, Dr Fadzila Azni binti Ahmad represented postgraduate student at the PhD level for the School of Social Sciences to receive the Best PhD Thesis Award ( Anugerah Tesis PhD Terbaik ) for the Pure Arts Cluster. 3 ISDEV THESES NOMINATED FOR BEST PHD THESIS AWARD

The Office of the Deputy Dean (Research and Postgraduate) of the School of Social Sciences has chosen PhD theses of three ISDEV graduates for the School's nomination for the Best PhD Thesis Award in Pure Arts of the University. The Award, to be delivered first time next year at a special night called Persada Kencana that aims to acknowledge excellence achievement of graduate students of the University, is managed by the Institute of Graduate Studies. The ISDEV theses chosen for the nomination were: 1. "Methods of Management of the Islamic Development Institutions in Malaysia" by Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad who is now a lecturer of the Islamic Development Management Programme of the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. ALTHOUGH there have been other ratings and rankings exercises, the one that really mattered was the accelerated programme for excellence (apex). The country’s four research universities were the frontrunners and it was no surprise when all four made the short list. However, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was the sole institution selected. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the university with apex status has the greatest potential among Malaysian universities to be of world-class standard. With it, USM can expect hundreds of millions of ringgit in additional funding to transform it into Malaysia's first world-class university. DR ZAHRI HAMAT RECEIVED OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD 2007

Dr Zahri Hamat (left) has been announced as one of the recipient of Outstanding Educator Award of the School of Social Sciences for 2007. He is the second ISDEV member being awarded with the Award, apart from Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh who had been awarded with the Award for fifth consecutive year. The Award was based on their teaching performance as evaluated by students.
